Preseason Oscar Game

.

The year is coming to an end and awards season is beginning. But before you go out to see For Your Consideration, please play Thmazing's Preseason Oscar Game. Here are the rules:

1. You are only predicting that a movie will be nominated--not that it will win.

2. You may only make one nomination per award.

3. You may nominate a movie in only one category. If you nominate a movie in more than one category, only the first will count. (In other words, you can't choose Smokey's Momma for best picture and best actress and best director and best art direction. And if you do, only the best picture guess will count.)

4. The winner will be the person who makes the most correct nomination guesses.

5. In the event of a tie, the tied player who posted first wins.

6. Categories marked with an * require a name / song title.

7. Categories marked with an * can receive half a point even if incorrect. For instance, if you thought Orson Welles would be nominated for best actor for his work in The Spitball Factory, but he was nominated instead for his role in Daisies Are Wholesome Flowers, you will receive half a point. Similarly, if instead or Orson, Paul Newman is nominated for best actor because of The Spitball Factory, half a point. But if Paul Newman is nominated for The Spitball Factory and Orsy is nommed for Daisies, you still only get one-half point. You were wrong after all.

8. All entries must be posted in the comments of this post by the last minute of November 2006. Part of the preseason fun is the impossibility of having seen every movie eligible.

9. You may research your answers anywhere you like except in the comments section of this post. Looking at others' guesses before posting your own makes you illegible to win. Honesty must be your ruler.

10. You do not have to make a guess in each category to qualify. But obviously, the more complete your survey, the better chance you have of winning.

11. Don't rearrange the nominations' order. That'll just annoy me.

12. So here's what you do: the categories appear below. Just copy them and paste them into the comments box, then fill them in.

13. REMEMBER: NO LOOKING AT OTHERS' SUBMISSIONS BEFORE SUBMITTING YOUR OWN.

14. After the real nominations come out, I will do the math and announce the winner.

15. The winner will get a cool prize.

16. Do your darnedest to beat Edgy.

Keep in mind that you can nominate each movie only once. So if you're convinced Starbuck Diner will be nominated in both editing and visual effects, but have no idea what else will be nominated for editing. Nominate it for editing and pick one of your other choices for visual effects. Et cetera. Follow the rules and have fun. Glory awaits. Take it.

Just in case you thoughtlessly hit comments without realizing it could lead to your disqualification, I will first represent the categories for you to copy, then a lot of blank space, then my guesses.

  4. I am not yet reading the comments, because I'm honest. However, because of stipulation 16, which I assume doesn't apply to me without throwing reality into chaos, I am now required to actually research my picks.

  6. And now I get to comment on your picks. Te he he.

Best motion picture of the year---Babel
Yep. lots o' buzz about this one. Since I wanted to pick it up in a different category, I didn't put it in here. I decided to go with a dark horse for my pick.

Best animated feature film of the year---Over the Hedge
The big buzz here is that there are so many to choose from this year. Flushed Away is the one I enjoyed most, so that's why I picked it. I have a feeling that the big winner this year might actually be A Scanner Darkly.

Achievement in directing---Martin Scorcese, The Departed
You can never go wrong by choosing Scorsese for a nomination; just don't pick him for a win. ;)

Performance by an actor in a leading role---Half Nelson, Half Nelson
Meh. No comment. At this time, anyway.

Performance by an actress in a leading role---Helen Mirren, The Queen
She is currently the leading contender. So I chose her too.

Performance by an actor in a supporting role---Adam Beach, Flag of our Fathers
Apparently they think this will be a difficult category this year because you have a number of shows with a large number to choose from. To be honest, I was going for my half-point pickup here by choosing someone from Babel.

Performance by an actress in a supporting role---Scarlett Johansson, The Prestige
Ooh. I liked her. But the commentators right now don't think she'll pick it up. Then again, I chose Lily Tomlin, which is likely the darkest horse of my picks. I love her and loved her in Pairie Home Companion.

    Adapted screenplay---Marie Antionette
This film is going to pick up something. Personally, I'd love to see it pick up director, but most critics say that won't happen.

    Original screenplay---Little Miss Sunshine
    Loved this. Sooooo good.

    Best documentary feature---An Inconvenient Truth
I think this is likely the top contender to win the category. I put in Jesus Camp just because it's getting some buzz right now what with the Haggard scandal and all.

Best foreign language film of the year---Volver
    I'm with you here.

    Best animated short film---Lifted
Where did you even find something to put in this slot? (And the next two?)

    Best live action short film---Bugcrush

Best documentary short subject---The Blood of Yingzhou District

    Achievement in film editing---United 93
I think that's the favorite right now. But since we weren't picking favorites . . .

Achievement in music written for motion pictures (Original score)---The Illusionist

Achievement in music written for motion pictures (Original song)---"Our Town", Cars
Did your instructions say to name the song, because I didn't understand that in the directions.

    Achievement in art direction---Dreamgirls
I hope the buzz about this film is correct. I very much want it to be good.

    Achievement in cinematography---V for Vendetta
Interesting choice. It didn't come up in any of my sites I went to for gossip.

    Achievement in costume design---The Fountain

Achievement in makeup---Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Man's Chest
I think word on the street is that this one's a given. Show some originality, man. ;)

    Achievement in sound editing---Superman Returns
    Damn. You copied me again.

Achievement in sound mixing---Mission: Impossible III
Ooh. Good pick. I hadn't thought of this one. Part of me wants to change my vote to X3 since this seems to be one of the three categories that goes to the summer blockbusters because the blockbusters can never win in the "real" categories.

    Achievement in visual effects---Eragon
I am anti-Eragon. Just as a general rule. Then again, I just don't believe in reading a book wherein the marketing campaign is based on the fact that it's written by a fifteen year old.

  9. Psst . . . Mely . . . Munich was nominated for last year's best picture.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Seriously?

Wow, I'm really bad at this.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Seriously. In fact, that was the only reason I saw that movie last year. And I sat huddled in my seat through the entire thing. Such violence.

    ReplyDelete
  12. .

Eragon was a terrible book, but I'd ru out of effectraganzas to nominate.

I don't think Da Vinci or X3 will be nommed no matter how worthy in those categories because they were so panned. That seems to happen. Although they both made money, so who can say?

Is A Scanner Darkly eligible for best animated feature? I'm not sure how they figure eligibility--I know Team America was eligible the year it came out and it's not animation at all. So it's a mystery.

    For my short films I...:

    (anim) picked Pixar's eligible film

(live) picked a winner at Sundance

(docu) picked one of the eight films on the Academy's shortlist. So I have a pretty good chance there. Either three or five of those eight films will be nominated.

Since I wasn't clear re: songtitle/name for that category, either will be fine.

With so many animated movies this year (ten animal features alone), the only one I'm sure about is Cars. But since I wanted to nominate it for best song, I went with the second highest grosser.

I look forward to the year a film-for-grownups wins this category though. And when a Bill Plympton film gets wide release. And a nomination.

I'm wary of my Half Nelson choice for best actor. The Academy's developing a habit of nominating some small films in the acting categories, but this movie's barely made $2mill. I wish I had thought of Forest Whitaker because that's who I would have gone with.

For full-length docs, this is, what, the third year in a row? that there have been a lot of wide-released eligible films. I think that's great, but that's why I went with the obvious one. There are just too many to be sure any popular and much-talked-about film with score a nomination.

I'm interested in how much overlap there was. I totally thought someone would go with Meryl Streep or someone from the Departed for that acted nods...and maybe someone still will. I hope we get lots more participants.

    ReplyDelete
  13. My problem with Meryl Streep was this: she did too many noteworthy things this year. Because of that, I think she'll likely not pull in any noms. For example, if a supporting actress nom was going to come from A Prairie Home Companion, it would certainly go to Meryl before Lily, no matter how much I adore Lily.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Wow. That is one impressive spamment.

    ReplyDelete
