Preseason Oscar Game

.

I know, I know ---- this post is way overdue (I nearly forgot) (!). But there's still time and I trust you will spend your days off this week pondering your entry.

For you newcomers, as the year draws to a close and awards season draws nigh, Thmazing's Preseason Oscar Game becomes all the rage among hip movie lovers. Sure, some of the frontrunners haven't even come out yet, yes, it is way too soon to have any sensible idea about who will win anything, but so what? That's what Thmazing's Preseason Oscar Game is all about!

(That and a truly atrocious photograph.)

Oxcar's Tush

Here are the rules:

1. Your goal is to predict that a movie will be nominated in a particular category (not that it will win).

2. You may only make one nomination per award.

3. You may nominate a movie in only one category. If you nominate a movie in more than one category, only the first will count. (In other words, you can't choose In the Land of Fuzzy Dice for Best Picture and Best Actress and Best Director and Best Art Direction. And if you do, only the Best Picture guess will count. Because it came first.)

4. The winner will be the person who makes the most correct nomination guesses.

5. In the event of a tie, the tied player who posted first wins.

6. Categories marked with an * require the name of a person or a song in addition to the movie title.

7. Categories marked with an * can receive half a point even if incorrect. For instance, if you thought Parker Pooky would be nominated for Best Actor for his work in What Sandwich, but he was nominated instead for his role in Stick It in Your Ear, you will receive half a point. Similarly, if instead of Pooky, Zaron Smith is nominated for Best Actor for his work in What Sandwich, half a point. But if Smith is nominated for What Sandwich and Pooky is nommed for Stick It in Your Ear, you still only get half a point. You were wrong after all.

8. All entries must be posted in the comments of this post by the last minute of Pearl Harbor Day 2008 (that's two Sundays). Part of the preseason fun is the impossibility of having seen every movie eligible. (Not that I personally am likely to see any of them.)

9. You may research your answers anywhere you like except in the comments section of this post. Looking at others' guesses before posting your own makes you illegible to win. Honesty is our policy. That and garroting filthy cheaters.

10. You do not have to take a stab at each category to qualify. But (obviously) the more complete your survey, the better chance you have of winning.

11. Don't rearrange the nominations' order. That'll just confuse me.

12. So here's what you do: the categories appear below. Just copy them and paste them into the comments box, then fill them in.

13. REMEMBER: NO LOOKING AT OTHERS' SUBMISSIONS BEFORE SUBMITTING YOUR OWN.

14. After the real nominations come out, I will do the math and announce the winner.

15. The winner will get a cool prize.

16. So please beat me so I can give it to someone this year. I'm undefeated and, frankly, given how few movies I see, it's getting ridiculous.

So. Go forth. If you would like to see last year's competition, here's the link.

Preseason Oscar Game, 2016

.

I discontinued the Preseason Oscar Game after 2010 because I had never had that many participants and because, ah, I always won. Which is boring.

Anyway, I'm bringing it back this year because I believe the time is ripe to waste time thinking too hard about movies we may or may not have even seen yet.

After you read the rules (or before! hey! why not!), click on over to http://bit.ly/funwithflicks and play away.

This year's winner will get a prize. Specifically, a sweet decades-old paperback that I think you will enjoy. Perhaps because of its appalling cover suitable for framing. (If you don't want one more physical thing around your house, or if shipping is prohibitively expensive, we can come up with a digital substitute.)

+RULES+

1. Your goal is to predict that a movie will be nominated in a particular category (not that it will win).

2. You may only make one nomination per award.

3. You may nominate a movie in only one category. If you nominate a movie in more than one category, only the first will count. (In other words, you can't choose My Mommy Ate Your Mommy for Best Picture and Best Director and Best Actress and Best Art Direction. If you do, only the Best Picture guess will count. Because it came first.)

4. The winner will be the person who makes the most correct nomination guesses.

4a. If I can't recognize what you typed as the title of a nominated film, type better next time. Geez.

5. In the event of a tie, the tied player who submitted first will win.

6. Some categories require the name of a person or a song in addition to the movie title.

6a. These categories can receive half a point even if incorrect. For instance, if you thought Steele Tiger would be nominated as Best Actor for his work in Oh Yeah, but he was nominated instead for his role in Never Saw It Coming, you will receive half a point. Similarly, if instead of Tiger, Harvey Mottre is nominated for Best Actor for his work in Bully Boy, half a point. But! if Mottre is nominated for Oh Yeah and Tiger is nommed for Never Saw It Coming, you still only get half a point. You were wrong after all.

7. All entries must be submitted to http://bit.ly/funwithflicks by the last minute of November (California time). Part of the Preseason Fun™ is the impossibility of having seen every movie eligible.

8. You may research your answers anywhere you like. Lots more chatter online these days than when this game was last played.

9. If you work as a film reviewer, festival programmer, are an Academy member, or are otherwise given unequal access to films, you may still play but you get a -10% hit as handicap.

10. You do not have to take a stab at each category to qualify. But, obviously, the more complete your survey, the better chance you have of winning.

11. After the real nominations come out next year, I will do the math and announce the winner.

11a. I will at the same time delete everyone's contact information and make all submissions public. If you would like your contact information to remain, note that in the contact-info field.

12. The winner will get a cool prize.

13. So please beat me so I can give it to someone this year. (I am, it bears repeating, undefeated.)

Note: I inputted my guesses already today, while information on the race is less available than it will be in coming weeks. It's my way of being a good host.

Preseason Oscar Game

.

The year is coming to an end and awards season is beginning. But before you go out to see For Your Consideration, please play Thmazing's Preseason Oscar Game. Here are the rules:

1. You are only predicting that a movie will be nominated--not that it will win.

2. You may only make one nomination per award.

3. You may nominate a movie in only one category. If you nominate a movie in more than one category, only the first will count. (In other words, you can't choose Smokey's Momma for best picture and best actress and best director and best art direction. And if you do, only the best picture guess will count.)

4. The winner will be the person who makes the most correct nomination guesses.

5. In the event of a tie, the tied player who posted first wins.

6. Categories marked with an * require a name / song title.

7. Categories marked with an * can receive half a point even if incorrect. For instance, if you thought Orson Welles would be nominated for best actor for his work in The Spitball Factory, but he was nominated instead for his role in Daisies Are Wholesome Flowers, you will receive half a point. Similarly, if instead or Orson, Paul Newman is nominated for best actor because of The Spitball Factory, half a point. But if Paul Newman is nominated for The Spitball Factory and Orsy is nommed for Daisies, you still only get one-half point. You were wrong after all.

8. All entries must be posted in the comments of this post by the last minute of November 2006. Part of the preseason fun is the impossibility of having seen every movie eligible.

9. You may research your answers anywhere you like except in the comments section of this post. Looking at others' guesses before posting your own makes you illegible to win. Honesty must be your ruler.

10. You do not have to make a guess in each category to qualify. But obviously, the more complete your survey, the better chance you have of winning.

11. Don't rearrange the nominations' order. That'll just annoy me.

16. Do your darnedest to beat Edgy.

Thmazing's Preseason Oscar Game Results

.

It was close this year but, well, I won. I had 11.5 with Satsuki right behind with 10. You can view the full results here. It was close and I think if she hadn't repeated any guesses, she may have won. So it was a close one.

I do have a serious question though, viz. should I keep doing the Preseason Oscar Game? This year we had four participants which I think is as many as I've ever had which suggests that, really, most people just aren't interested. (Plus, I've never lost so I never get to give away my fabulous prizes.)

So please leave a comment either way. Should it stay? Should it die? And even if you don't care --- tell me that too.

Thanks.

Preseason Oscar Game Results

Oscar's Tush.

The results are in! and in a thrilling, nailbiting finish, Kadusey ties me for the win in an unprecedented but long-desired break in my (previously) seemingly endless winning streak! We tied at eleven, but had she paid attention to the rules better, she might have won outright. She did submit a disqualified second guess that put her up by two points.

I didn't see a big leader in the nominations, but now that there plainly is, I'm more irritated than ever at myself for not seeing Benjamin Button yet.

In other news, by not including Dark Knight in the best-picture noms, the Oscars have taken one more step to irrelevancy and bad tv ratings. Good job, Academy!

Preseason Oscar Game

.

It's that time of year, folks! Time for a terrible photomashup and speculation on the best movies we haven't even seen yet! We live for this kind of thing, in Thutopia--- What could be more exciting?

Oscar Madness

Here are the rules:

1. Your goal is to predict that a movie will be nominated in a particular category (not that it will win).

2. You may only make one nomination per award.

3. You may nominate a movie in only one category. If you nominate a movie in more than one category, only the first will count. (In other words, you can't choose Barking Up the Wrong Leg for Best Picture and Best Actress and Best Director and Best Art Direction.

For instance, if you thought Dave Adonis would be nominated for Best Actor for his work in Bully Boy, but he was nominated instead for his role in Death in the Midwest, you will receive half a point. Similarly, if instead of Adonis, Marlon Muirin is nominated for Best Actor for his work in Bully Boy, half a point. But! if Muirin is nominated for Bully Boy and Adonis is nommed for Death in the Midwest, you still only get half a point. You were wrong after all.

8. All entries must be posted in the comments of this post by the last minute of November (note that the comments will timestamp your entry California time). Part of the preseason fun is the impossibility of having seen every movie eligible.

9. You may research your answers anywhere you like except in the comments section of this post. Looking at others' guesses before posting your own makes you illegible to win. Honesty is our policy. That and garroting filthy cheaters.

10. You do not have to take a stab at each category to qualify. But, obviously, the more complete your survey, the better chance you have of winning.

11. Don't rearrange the nominations' order. That'll just confuse me. And I reserve the right to disqualify anyone who rearranges them if I'm running low on time.

16. So please beat me so I can give it to someone this year. (I am, after all, still undefeated.)

Time almost out to play my Preseason Oscar Game

.

If you're waiting till the last minute, you still have some time. Otherwise, dally no longer. We've had very few submissions this year so your odds at winning, one would assume, are pretty darn good. I mean: it's easier to beat three talented people than three thousand idiots, right?

Anyway, if you are waiting till the last minute, you need to post your guesses by 1:59.999999999999999999999999999pm Sunday night.

Click on the photo to play. (Yes, that means you have to touch it. I know. It's gross.)

We're down to one month in Preseason Oscar Game play. And participation, which I, in my optimism, expected to be up this year, is down. Very down. I mean, in other words, so far it's just me. That's it.

So.... Maybe I won't have to give out a prize this year after all.

But I don't want that to happen. So please consider the movies (you already know more than I did, like, for instance, Amelia is apparently really really boring --- so use that) and put together your entry.

Check my math (the preseason oscar game results)

.

First the bad news: I won again. I'm never going to be able to give out fun and exciting prizes if I keep winning every year.

The good news, of course, is that I won again. Yippee!

So the final results:

    Theric: 11 points
    Edgy: 6 points
    Schmetterling: 1.5 points

Since I'm at work and my cleverness is limited, I'm just going to list the categories, then my score, Edgy's score and Schmet's score respectively:

Oscar dude
Best motion picture of the year: 1,0,0
Best animated feature film of the year: 1,1,1
    Achievement in directing: 1,0,0
Performance by an actor in a leading role: 1,0,½
Performance by an actress in a leading role: 1,0,0
Performance by an actor in a supporting role: 0,0,0
Performance by an actress in a supporting role: 1,0,0
    Adapted screenplay: 0,1,0
    Original screenplay: 0,1,0
    Best documentary feature: 1,0,0
Best foreign language film of the year: 0,0,0
    Best animated short film: 0,0,0
Best live action short film: 0,0,0
    Best documentary short subject: 1,0,0

Achievement in music written for motion pictures (Original song): 0,0,0
    Achievement in art direction: 0,1,0
    Achievement in cinematography: 0,0,0
    Achievement in costume design: 0,0,0
    Achievement in makeup: 0,0,0
    Achievement in sound editing: 1,0,0
    Achievement in sound mixing: 0,0,0
    Achievement in visual effects: 1,1,0

How to check my math:

    1. Check the game rules here.

    2. Check the contestants' attempts here.

    3. Check the actual nominees here.

Thank you all and I hope more of you will participate next year.

On handicapping next year:
Theric has remained right around eleven each year of this competition and there is no reason to suppose he will improve. Edgy has improved each year and can be expected to continue to do so. If he starts selecting with cold rationality rather than his heart, he can be a real contender. Schmetterling can be expected to improve enormously next year over this. Melyngoch is not expected to be back in time for next year's competition. The real question, Steve, is who will show up for the first time next year? And how competitive will they be?

Midweek Makeup Svithe #2: Take this to the bank. The spiritual bank. And buy a savings bond for a friend. A spiritual savings bond.

.

I just finished reading the book all we Mormon adults are supposed to be reading this year. Kind of a famous first for me, although I always have good intentions.

Anyway, the title of the final chapter is "Sharing the Gospel" and he made a couple points which I thought particularly sound.

Given that he doesn't have a blog of his own and would undoubtedly like to have this message spread, I offered to let him make use of my humble forum for the afternoon.

President KimballNow, we are a busy people; but the Lord did not say, “If it is convenient for you, would you consider preaching the gospel.” He has said, “Let every man learn his duty” (D&C 107:99) and “Behold … it becometh every man who hath been warned to warn his neighbor.” (D&C 88:81.)

What a thrilling thing it is, my dear brothers and sisters who are fellow members of the kingdom of God, to be entrusted by the Lord to serve as messengers of His word to our brothers and sisters who are not members of the Church. Let us assume for a moment that the roles were reversed—that you were not a member of the Church but that your present nonmember neighbor was a Latter-day Saint. Would you want him or her to share the gospel with you? Would you then rejoice in the new truths you had learned? Would your love and respect increase for your neighbor who had shared these truths with you? Of course, the answer to all of these questions would be: Yes!

It should be clear to us that usually we must warm our neighbors before we can warn them properly. Our neighbors must experience our genuine friendship and fellowship. We want members to entreat neighbors, not to scold them or scare them.

I feel the Lord has placed, in a very natural way within our circles of friends and acquaintances, many persons who are ready to enter into his Church. We ask that you prayerfully identify those persons and then ask the Lord’s assistance in helping you introduce them to the gospel.

Don’t wait for long fellowshipping nor for the precise, perfect moment. What you need to do is find out if they are the elect. “[My] elect hear my voice and harden not their hearts.” (D&C 29:7.) If they hear and have hearts open to the gospel, it will be evident immediately. If they won’t listen and their hearts are hardened with skepticism or negative comments, they are not ready. In this case, keep loving them and fellowshipping them and wait for the next opportunity to find out if they are ready. You will not lose their friendship. They will still respect you.
Spence's Sig

Thank you, president. Now back to our regularly scheduled banality.

Your input requested

.

As a result of this redesign, many old posts have gone all to ehell. Examples:What should I do about this? In the future I can adapt to the new constraints (as I have at the mere 400px-wide Fobcomics), but my history's been uglified. I can, perhaps, get rid of the right margin (or smaller it), but are the advantages to the past worth it?

One big problem with a narrower content space is what to do with larger images (I'm not sure what I'll do tomorrow with the Preseason results, which were intended to be quite wide indeed).

Particularly those of you with narrow-content blogs yourself, what do you do?

ps: should I keep the front/rss tabs uptop?
