Old West Walking Dead. The black & white art makes hard to tell who's who as the bullets and blood fly. And there is pages and pages and pages of nothing but such flying. That said, it starts with a Wounded Knee-level massacre of a small native tribe. Eightish years later, the sole survivor comes to the town now on that plain, draws a magic circle around town and the cemetery, kills his horse and himself, and brings the dead to life. And the ending was classily left open for the never-written sequel. Not a bad book. Just a book.

I also appreciate how these volumes include earlier Black Panther stories which, for their era, are equally remarkable.

139) Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis by J.D. Vance, finished December 28

When I reached the end of his childhood and he shipped off to the marines, I wasn't sure there was anything left worth reading. The shock value of his Appalachian upbringing had come to a close and now he was going to turn everything around, woowoo, the end. But it's good I persevered. Because the section of the book I most needed to read was his years at Yale Law.

I'm forty-one and those chapters finally explained the trajectory of my life to me. I didn't know any of this stuff. I still don't quite believe it. Somehow,
to pick a writing example, I think it's more virtuous to toss my work onto the slush heap than to try and work my anemic network, anemic because I believe in my core that asking for help, even being friendly with people who could help me, is dirty and crass and probably immoral. You do it alone. You don't need other people.
You don't need their help.

I never spoke to professor's outside class except in remarkable circumstances. Doing so would have shown weakness. And so when I wanted to write an honor's thesis or attend grad school, there was no one to provide the assistance required. But I couldn't see that I was doing things wrong.

I wonder how my life would have differed if I had known that other people are not rivals and enemies and roadblocks.... Which is overstating the way I feel, but only in measure, not in intention.

So today, as we drove to San Francisco, I talked to my fourteen-year-old about his future plans and who he can talk to about reaching them.

I stayed up hours last night realizing that I've wasted twenty years not getting to know people and avoiding failure. And so I have failed.

I'm not wholly dissatisfied with where I am, but I also know that how I ended up here was not the truest path.
