Mary Roach! Don't be scared, but I am your biggest fan.

Bonk by Mary Roach.

I'm just about done with Spook; I loved Stiff; her column is really the only reason I like Reader's Digest; and I am super excited for the pending release of Bonk. In fact, I can't remember the last time I was this excited about an unreleased book about sex. You know what? I'm going to go out on a limb and say I've never been this excited for an unreleased book about sex.

I notice on her website that she's happy to visit book groups in the Bay Area and it gives me an idea.

I will get her over here for a "book group" then kidnap her. Stick her in the basement. I will, yes, let her have an internet connection, but I will also force her to write well researched jokes for me. I will be very happy.

And you, Mary, you will be very happy too.

  1. Dude, she totally knows how to steganographically transpose ASCII into images using Paint in her head. Come on.

Also, is the ".comment-link {margin-left:.6em;}" outside of your <style> tag that always shows up as the first thing on the page a stylistic touch or an oversight?

  2. Do you buy all these books, or use the library, or hang out at the bookstore, or what?

me- library and amazon. and sometimes, friends who own them, but shamefully I always keep them too long, so you've been warned.

Neither. I'm just mystified as to why it's there. If I could figure it out, I'ld remove it. But every time I've tried I also screw up something important.

As for the steganography---are you serious? How can you tell? That's amazing!

Cchrissy---I own a LOT of books (most are online), and mostly just read those--because I hate the pressure of having to return them on time. I can take a LONG time to read a book (note here, for instance). But I almost never buy books new or at full price. Lots of 50c library-sale books, for instance.

And we like lending books. Don't worry too much about taking a long time.

  4. Psst! "Bonk!" is one of the books available through LT's Early Reviewer's program (http://www.librarything.com/er/list). They've only got 20 copies to give out, and over 500 people requesting it, but you've still got a chance if you try!

Probably not, actually, as I've never reviewed anything. But still! I should try!

Maybe I'll review my copy of Spook first.....

  6. You may want to look into getting a basement if this plan is to work.

    You know, you're right?

  8. You don't have to have reviewed something, to be eligible. (But if they give you an ER book and then you don't review that, then it affects your future eligibility.) And since you already own other books by her, you probably stand a good chance of getting this one, since they try to assign the books by their target audience.

    Go sign up!

I did, but don't they also consider how good one is at being a reviewer already?

Anyway, I would love to get it first. Best of luck to me!

  10. Not for your first review, no. They consider how well your library matches up with the theoretical target audience, whether or not you've had an ER book before, and whether or not you failed to review a previous ER book.

  12. "One in a million."

Oo! Go me--catching allusions to movies I've never seen all the way through (it's a hard one to sit still for, and as much as I've heard it quoted, I'm pretty sure I've heard all the jokes multiple times)
