Preseason Oscar Game

.

The year is coming to an end and awards season is drawing near. But before some of the frontrunners even come out, you can play Thmazing's Preseason Oscar Game! Yes, it is too soon to have any idea what you should pick! Nobody knows! That's what makes it fun!

Here are the rules:

1. You are only predicting that a movie will be nominated--not that it will win.

2. You may only make one nomination per award.

3. You may nominate a movie in only one category. If you nominate a movie in more than one category, only the first will count. (In other words, you can't choose Poor Theric for best picture and best actress and best director and best art direction. And if you do, only the best picture guess will count. Because it came first.)

4. The winner will be the person who makes the most correct nomination guesses.

5. In the event of a tie, the tied player who posted first wins.

6. Categories marked with an * require a name or song title in addition to the movie title.

7. Categories marked with an * can receive half a point even if incorrect. For instance, if you thought Melonhead Wilson would be nominated for best actor for his work in Zillions of Fish, but he was nominated instead for his role in Not Tonight, Honey, you will receive half a point. Similarly, if instead of Melonhead, Nark Dooles is nominated for best actor for his work in Zillions of Fish, half a point. But if Nark is nominated for Zillions of Fish -and- Mel is nommed for Not Tonight, you still only get one-half point. You were wrong after all.

8. All entries must be posted in the comments of this post by the last minute of November 2006. Part of the preseason fun is the impossibility of having seen every movie eligible.

9. You may research your answers anywhere you like except in the comments section of this post. Looking at others' guesses before posting your own makes you illegible to win. Honesty must be your guide.

10. You do not have to make a guess in each category to qualify. But obviously, the more complete your survey, the better chance you have of winning.

11. Don't rearrange the nominations' order. That'll just confuse me.

12. So here's what you do: the categories appear below. Just copy them and paste them into the comments box, then fill them in.

13. REMEMBER: NO LOOKING AT OTHERS' SUBMISSIONS BEFORE SUBMITTING YOUR OWN.

14. After the real nominations come out, I will do the math and announce the winner.

15. The winner will get a cool prize.

16. So please beat me so I can give it to someone this year.

Keep in mind that you can nominate each movie only once. So if you're convinced Pooky in My Tooky will be nominated in both editing and visual effects, but have no idea what else will be nominated for editing. Nominate it for editing and pick one of your other choices for visual effects. Et cetera. Follow the rules and have fun. Glory awaits. Take it.

Just in case you thoughtlessly hit comments without realizing it could lead to your disqualification, I will first reproduce the categories for you to copy, then a lot of blank space, then my guesses.

  4. It's okay if I'm disqualified. I don't have enough knowledge of films to participate. I just wanted to say that I find that picture on your post freakishly scary.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Freak. I just found a list of 2007 films on Wikipedia, and I've only seen eight of them.

I suppose that means I lose, probably, but I'd like to play anyway.

CURSE YOU, THERIC! NOT LETTING ME REPEAT GUESSES! WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO ME?
    Shoot....

Kay. So. Here we go. I'll just replace the categories I don't have guesses for with an X.

  7. .

Schmett! I'm glad you're playing, but you know, there's no rule against picking movies you haven't seen. I haven't seen hardly any of mine.

Edgy--I always love to see yours--they always make me really nervous. And I would totally love it if TMBG were nominated. That would make me happy.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Why do my picks make you nervous?

    ReplyDelete
  9. This comment has been removed by the author.

  10. .

Because I know you probably know way more than I do. At the very least, you've seen more movies than me. Of the ones I nominated, I've only seen are Ratatouille, Transformers and Everything Will Be OK (spelled okay wrong on my list--I just hate the OK spelling). I'll bet you've seen around half--even including ones that haven't come out.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Good point. So, to quell my own curiosity, the ones I've already seen from my list are:
    Evening
    Lars and the Real Girl
    Hairspray
For the Bible Tells Me So
    Pirates of the Caribbean
    Meet the Robinsons
    Harry Potter
    Spider-Man
    Across the Universe

I guess it's more, but like I said, I'm throwing in the movies I like and want to see get noms, hoping for the half point. For example, I'm not all over Michelle Pfeiffer (though some sites are buzzing her), but I want to get Harispray in there.

The only two I actually feel strongly about are Evening for Best Picture and Ryan Gosling for Best Actor.

    ReplyDelete
  12. .

I didn't know Evening was even out yet. Man, I suck.

Nothing against Ryan, but I don't see him getting the nom. Even though I hear he never has sex with the doll, sexy stuff like that (eg, sexdolls) tends to get overlooked. The fact that he was nominated last year is a huge plus though.

Incidentally, that's why I think Ang Lee was mad to take Lust, Caution out of the running for foreign film--I don't think it has a prayer in the other categories.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Um. Not now that I've read other guesses, I can't.

Oh. And did TMBG write that song? I knew they performed it but--man, Meet the Robinsons has like the coolest soundtrack ever. Seriously. Not cool in the sense that I would listen to it while driving around town, but cool in the sense that--I mean, come on, it's got Danny Elfman, TMBG, The All-American Rejects--man!

Hm. Sorry that's so disjointed. Call it an exercise in stream of cons--oo! Moo cow! I love moo cows!

    ReplyDelete
  14. .

It's true though: Danny Elfman + TMBG = Pretty Much the Coolest Combo Ever.
