Teaching Mormon Short Fiction

.

My time is short so I don't have a lot of time to get into last night, but I ditched O's birthday party early and went to the Berkeley Institute of Religion at the invitation of MJ Pritchett to teach short stories (ignore the original schedule) during the final class of their series on the Mormon arts. (Last week, Carol Lynn Pearson tackled Mormon poetry.)

After giving an overview of What's Happening Now, we discussed Jack Harrell's "Calling and Election" and BG Christensen's "Abraham's Purgatory" and then we got into some fun macro issues and a jolly time was had by all.

Wich you could have been there.

  1. MJ is awesome. I had no idea that he was now on the faculty of the Berkeley Institute of Religion -- one of my favorite places in the world. It's where I discovered Mormon literature and where my wife and I held our ring ceremony and wedding reception.

  2. You're a wimp. You should have taught "Family History."

  3. .

It was only a 75minutes class! And it's not available to read for free anywhere. I wanted to have Petersen and Hallstrom and, well, myself, but I had to stick to two.

In retrospect though, although both great, maybe those stories were too similar.

I lost my way halfway through that last paragraph. I meant to say neither P nor H have stories available online that can be easily copy and pasted.

I did bring both their books to share and promote though.

  5. And now Berkeley's Comparative Religions class wants to buy 100 gazillion copies of The Fob Bible, right?

    Right?
