Failure

.

Well, this weekend was one big grading extravaganza and due to a shocking number of missing assignments roughly half my students are failing. Given the general apathy, I see two primary ways to fix this problem before Friday, the end of the quarter.

1) Offer extra credit for breathing.

2) Offer double extra credit for never breathing again.

  1. Grading makes me want to poke my eyes out. I don't remember being this apathetic about homework. I want to scream every time someone doesn't complete an assignment or just doesn't even bother turning it in. Maybe I need to get more apathetic about teaching...

  2. I think if you presented both options, you'd be surprised how many of your students would take the the second. It's amazing what the words "extra credit" can do to a student's survival instinct.

  3. I was always confused at how much time students would put into their extra credit work, yet they couldn't be bothered to a) do their assigned work and b) do it well enough to not have to do the extra credit. Such a weird mentality.

  4. I have the opposite problem--the majority of my students are getting A's, and I fear it's more that I'm an easy grader than that I'm a wonderful teacher. Of course, most of them have at least done the assignments even if they haven't done them well.

  5. .

I'm an extraordinarily easy grader myself. Just no one ever turns anything in.

And why is it that they are all excited to do extra credit now? I've offered extra credit all year, and now they want to do it?

    Hhhhhh.

  6. Great Big High School Girl has for the first time become a teacher's (and a mother's)nightmare...

    Smart Girl - Dumb Behaviors.

She is soooo on radar now and quite hating life.

Oh and apologies to all of her teachers - I am making her do every cotton pickin' assignment (even the ones she will receive no credit for) before she can resume social endeavors.

Ten days later only one assignment is undone.

    Yep, she loves me.
